Finding and Organizing Coupons

There are several ways I get my coupons.

1.  Newspaper-  Almost every Sunday there are coupons in the newspaper put out by Redplum, Smart Source or Proctor and Gamble.   Usually there are not coupon inserts on holidays.  I will try to keep you posted when they are in the paper.

2.  Internet-  You can print coupons directly from coupons.com in my sidebar to the right.  You can print coupons from Safeway’s website.  Most of the time you can print them twice.  Also Proctor and Gambles website has e-saver coupons that you can load directly to your Safeway card.  The nice thing about e-saver’s is that you can also use a paper coupon and it will take both for one item.

3.  Newspaper Recycling Containers-  There are few really good spots for getting coupons out of the containers in my town.  When the bin is really full, it only takes about 5 minutes for me to get a stack of coupon inserts.  I just look for the thickest papers and it’s usually Sunday’s.  I’m amazed at how many people don’t use their coupons.

4.  Local Coffee Shops and Assisted Living Facilities.  Here’s a great post by Amanda about putting recyling boxes in local coffee shops and picking up newspaper/coupon inserts for them.  You could also stop in at Assisted Living facilities and ask the director if you could put a recyling box out and pick it up twice a week for them.

5.  You can buy them on-line.  I haven’t tried this yet, but one of these days when the deal is something I really use and it’s a sweet deal, I probably will and I’ll let you know how I do it.

6.  Ask family and friends.  I also get coupons from my family, they send me diaper coupons, I send them coupons they need that I don’t use.

I use to organize my coupons by insert date and then cut them as I needed them.  Here’s a great post by SuperCoupon Girl, about a clipless file system.  I found that I frequently missed a coupon deal when I did it this way, but a lot of people like doing it this way.  And some other great ways to organize are here at $5 dollar dinners.  Find the way that works for you.  If you choose to do the clipless system you will be able to find the coupons by looking at the date on the side of the insert and the name of the insert.  I try to always post the date and insert name of the coupon I am using.  For example if I have posted a coupon like this “(RP 4/19)” that means it’s from the April 19th Red Plum.  So if you have your inserts organized by date it will be easy to find the one you need when the deal comes.

So now, I cut almost all of them, even one’s that are items I usually wouldn’t buy.  I have learned to cut every coupon because sometimes I will get something for free or it will sweeten the deal on something I already buy.  Sometimes Walgreens will offer a free rebate or register reward on the full price of a product and if you have manufacture coupon to put with it, then you now have a money-maker!!

I have a fold out file system that I bought at Walmart for $5.88.  I have 12 dividers and a pocket that I keep envelopes for each store that I buy at.  I can get a little frazzled at the store and forget things so I pull the coupons for the dividers and put them in the store envelope, to make it go more smoothly.

I have labeled the dividers:

  • Dairy
  • Paper
  • Breakfast
  • Cleaning
  • Baking
  • Bathroom
  • Girl Stuff
  • Canned
  • Misc
  • Frozen
  • Snacks
  • Restaurant
